Government Pushes Stricter Gambling Laws

Argentina’s government wants tougher rules on illegal online betting businesses. The proposal came from Sedronar, the drug policy agency. President Javier Milei signed the bill with senior officials. Cabinet Chief Manuel Adorni supported it, along with Health Minister Mario Lugones and Security Minister Alejandra Monteoliva.

Officials say illegal betting is now a growing public health problem. The bill could change how authorities deal with these businesses across the country. Illegal operators could face prison terms from three to six years. Companies that help them may also face punishment.

This includes payment firms, ad services, and digital support providers. These helpers could face prison terms from two to four years.

Advertising Could Be Fully Banned

The bill also introduces more regulations for gambling advertising in Argentina. The officials have called for a complete ban on illegal gambling ads. This includes ads on the Internet, television, radio, and billboards.

Bloggers, agencies, and media outlets could also be liable. The goal is to keep younger generations out of the picture as much as possible. There will also be more stringent regulations for licensed gambling companies. No ads should be directed at minors or ads that promote gambling as a solution to financial issues.

Ads also cannot link gambling with alcohol or tobacco. Nevertheless, legal operators may still advertise under stricter rules.

Banks and Regulators Get New Roles

Argentina’s Central Bank may help enforce the new rules. It would block payments linked to illegal gambling. Banks and payment firms must also improve age checks. Weak systems could lead to penalties.

The communications agency Enacom would also gain new powers. It could block illegal gambling sites and remove ads. Officials say more minors now access betting services online. They warn this trend may grow without stronger action.

Another Gambling Bill Still Waiting

This new bill comes while another gambling law is still stuck in Congress. Lawmakers approved it in the lower house in November 2024. But Senate committees have not moved it forward. The last debate took place in October 2025.

Some lawmakers are pushing for faster action. Congressman Maximiliano Ferraro warned against lobbying pressure. The government also plans education and prevention programs. Sedronar and the Health Ministry would lead these efforts.
