The World Alliance of Gambling and Betting Was Established in Switzerland

As Switzerland continues to block rogue online casinos, it also contributes to broader efforts to represent regulated gambling worldwide. The new organisation — WGBA — is primed to become a global representative for authorised operators in discussions with state officials, regulators and international bodies.

Protecting player interests, tackling illegal gambling, and conducting market research are named as its core priorities.

WGBA Sets a Launch Date and Names Its Leader

WGBA plans to hold its official launch in Geneva and publish its first major industry report before the end of 2026. Although it was established in July, WGBA started to gain traction in October.

After resigning from the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) in September after more than a decade as secretary general, Maarten Haijer has been appointed to run the new organisation. At WGBA, he will advance the regulated iGaming sector’s interests on the international stage.

Major Operators Back WGBA’s Global Industry Push

WGBA’s list of participants includes some of the gambling industry’s most prominent companies, including bet365, Entain, Flutter Entertainment, and FDJ United. Their involvement brings together global reach and substantial interests in regulated betting markets.

The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) also joined forces with WGBA to represent licensed operators at the European level. Together, these organisations seek to establish themselves as a voice for the regulated sector in international discussions.
