Illegal Market Grows Across Britain

The Betting and Gaming Council said illegal gambling keeps growing across the United Kingdom. The group warned that offshore casinos now reach more British players online. Industry estimates showed the illegal market reached almost £17bn during 2025. The figures also showed the market tripled since 2019.

Growth increased during recent years. Reports showed the market doubled during the last two years alone. Many legal casinos now feel concerned. Some fear losing more users to illegal websites.

Research from H2 Gambling Capital estimated the illegal market stood near £5bn during 2017. By 2025, the figure reportedly climbed to around £16.6bn.

Industry Wants Faster Action

Grainne Hurst called for stronger action against illegal casinos. She warned offshore operators appear more active and easier to find online. Hurst also said strict customer checks may hurt legal businesses. She warned difficult sign-up systems could push players toward illegal websites instead.

That issue remains important during current policy talks. Many companies worry about losing regular users. Several concerns continue shaping discussions:

  • Offshore casinos avoid many UK gambling rules

  • Financial checks may frustrate some players

  • Illegal websites still target British users

UK Regulator Increases Its Focus

The UK Gambling Commission recently created a role focused on illegal gambling markets. The decision showed growing concern inside the regulator. Still, some industry figures questioned the strength of the position. Critics argued the role may lack enough funding and support.

Others said stronger enforcement powers remain necessary. They believe illegal operators still reach UK players without serious punishment. Matej Novota also raised concerns about current enforcement efforts. He said reports and warnings alone may not stop offshore businesses.

Future Rules May Shape the Market

The wider debate now focuses on balance between safety and business growth. Regulators want stronger protection for players using legal casinos. At the same time, licensed operators want easier checks and simpler registration systems. They argue difficult processes may help illegal competitors instead.

Nevertheless, lawmakers still face difficult choices during coming months. Tougher rules may improve safety, yet they could also push users toward offshore websites. That risk continues worrying many companies across Britain. Future decisions may shape the gambling market for years ahead.
