Caesars Entertainment has sold the World Series of Poker (WSOP) brand and intellectual property rights for $500 million to an online gaming investment group, while retaining the right to host the tournament for the next two decades.

Caesars Entertainment has announced the sale of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) brand and intellectual property rights for $500 million to an investment group specializing in online gaming. Despite this sale, Caesars will continue to host the renowned poker tournament for the next twenty years.

This transaction follows comments from CEO Tom Reeg, who recently stated that while the company does not plan to sell operating casino assets, it remains open to trading “non-core, nonoperating casino assets.”

During Caesars’ second-quarter earnings call, Reeg referenced potential asset sales that could provide financial flexibility, while JP Morgan analyst Joe Greff described the WSOP deal as part of a broader effort to reduce the company’s $12.4 billion long-term debt.

Key Details of the Transaction

  • The investment group NSUS Group, owner of the online poker platform GGPoker, will pay $250 million in cash and a $250 million promissory note due five years after closing.

  • The promissory note will be secured by the WSOP’s intellectual property assets.

  • The transaction is expected to close by the end of this year, pending regulatory approvals.

Caesars’ Continued Involvement

  • Caesars will retain the rights to host the WSOP live tournament each summer at the Horseshoe Las Vegas for two decades.

  • Caesars Digital will continue to operate WSOP.com in Nevada under license.

  • The company will keep leveraging its global network of properties to promote poker events and circuits.

Strategic and Historical Context

  • Caesars acquired the WSOP brand in 2004 from the Binion family and expanded it globally.

  • NSUS Group, headquartered in Toronto with offices in Europe and Asia, aims to use GGPoker’s technology to grow the WSOP’s digital presence.

  • The WSOP has evolved from a local Las Vegas event to a six-week global tournament series, with record-breaking participation.

The 2024 WSOP featured 99 live events and over $437 million in prizes, with Jonathan Tamayo winning the $10 million Main Event.

With this landmark sale, Caesars retains a strong operational role in poker’s most prestigious tournament while offloading a non-core asset to strengthen its financial position.
