India Bans Online Money Games; New Rules From 1 May
India will bring in new online gaming rules from 1 May. The rules ban all online money games and set a clear legal system for other games. This marks a strong change in how the sector will work.

Clear Ban on Money-Based Games
The government has banned all online games that use real money. Officials said any game with money stakes is not allowed. The move comes under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025. Parliament approved the law in August last year after long talks.
Authorities want to remove confusion in the market. For years, rules were unclear and open to different views.
New Split Between Game Types
The new system clearly separates allowed games from banned ones. Social games and skill-based games are still allowed under rules. Games without real money may not need full registration. This reduces pressure on smaller developers and studios.
Nevertheless, esports and similar categories may still need registration. The goal is to stop misuse of labels by operators.
New Authority Will Control The Sector
India will set up the Online Gaming Authority of India. It will act as the main body to manage the sector. The group will include senior officials from several ministries. These include finance, law, sports, and home affairs.
The authority will publish lists of banned games. It will also handle complaints from users and companies.
Stronger Powers For Enforcement
The authority can investigate companies and issue fines. It can also work with banks and police. This will help track money linked to illegal games. Authorities want to stop hidden financial flows.
It will also hear appeals from users. This gives a clear process for disputes. Subsequently, decisions will follow set timelines. This aims to make rules more predictable.
Focus on User Protection
The rules focus strongly on user safety. Companies must give clear terms and fair systems for complaints. They must not use false claims about fast money or easy wins. Officials warned that such claims can mislead users. Key rules include:
Clear safety tools for users
Simple and honest terms
Fast complaint handling
No misleading money claims
Digital System For Enforcement
All enforcement will happen online. Cases and reviews will be handled through digital systems. Penalties will depend on how serious the rule break is. The harm to users will also be checked.
This system is meant to be faster and clearer. It also reduces delays in decision-making. Finally, the market now enters a new phase. Companies will need to adjust quickly to the new rules.
