Lawmakers Focus on Safer Gambling

Another bill, S-2356, would study gambling ads. Lawmakers want to see if certain messages encourage risky betting behaviour. The push comes as sports betting and online gaming continue to grow fast. This growth brings more state revenue, but also more concern about player safety.

Changes to Self-Exclusion Rules

Lawmakers are also reviewing updates to New Jersey’s self-exclusion programme. The changes would add extra steps before players can return to gambling. People who want to remove themselves from exclusion lists may need to watch educational videos first. These videos would explain addiction risks and support options.

Supporters say this could help prevent impulsive decisions. Critics say the rules may not go far enough. Regulators are also planning stronger monitoring of player behaviour. Casinos would need to track signs of harmful gambling patterns.

If warning signs appear, operators may need to step in. This could include contact with the player or safer gambling reminders. State data shows gambling addiction helpline calls have risen 277% since 2018. This increase is adding pressure on lawmakers.

Gambling Revenue Still Growing

New Jersey’s gambling industry continues to bring in strong tax revenue. Online gaming and sports betting are the main drivers of growth. The sector has generated about $1.7 billion in total revenue. Around $246 million has gone to the state this fiscal year.

Lawmakers now face a challenge. They must balance economic growth with public safety. New proposals could also change how casinos communicate with players. These include:

• Fewer promotional messages and notifications

• More addiction awareness programmes in schools

New Jersey’s Growing Role

New Jersey is already a significant force in the regulation of gambling in the United States. After significant court decisions, the state was a leader in legal sports betting.

In 2013, the state approved online gambling and in 2018, it approved sports betting. These moves helped to form the current US gambling market. Now, lawmakers are readying themselves for another change, one that is centered on player safety.

The other states continue to use voluntary rules primarily. New Jersey might be a blueprint for more stringent and required safeguards.
