Online Casino Remains the Main Driver

Most of the activity came from online casino games. The segment generated CAD $8.14 billion in wagers and CAD $314.1 million in revenue during April. Those figures accounted for 87.4% of total wagers and 77.5% of revenue. The gap tells an interesting story — casino games produced huge betting volume, but revenue grew at a slower pace.

Many casino games allow players to wager the same funds repeatedly. As a result, wagering totals can rise quickly while operator revenue remains lower. The market’s overall revenue rate stood at 4.35% for the month.

Sports Betting Delivers Strong Revenue

Sports betting did not yield the same results. The sector received $1.05 billion in wagers and generated CAD $86 million in revenue. Betting accounted for 11.2 % of all wagers, but 21.2 % of the market revenue. It had a win rate of 8.23%, which is over 2 times the casino's rate.

That difference is a major characteristic of the Ontario market. The casino business is responsible for the scale, but sports betting accounts for more of the profits per dollar bet.

Poker Maintains a Small Presence

Poker remained the smallest regulated segment during April. The category generated CAD $128 million in wagers and CAD $5.3 million in revenue. Its market share stayed modest:

  • 1.4% of total wagers

  • 1.3% of total revenue

  • 4.14% revenue rate

More Than One Million Active Accounts

Ontario reported approximately 1.265 million active player accounts during the month. That number offers another view of the market’s size. Based on reported figures, each active account averaged roughly CAD $7,364 in wagers. Revenue averaged about CAD $320 per account.

These numbers do not reflect individual spending patterns. Instead, they provide a broad picture of activity across the market.

Four Years After Launch

April 2026 also marked four years since Ontario opened its regulated iGaming market. The province launched the system in April 2022 and created a framework covering casino games, sports betting, and poker.

That structure remains uncommon in North America — where many jurisdictions focus mainly on sports betting. Hence, Ontario continues to post wagering totals that reach several billion dollars each month.

Beyond the headline numbers, April’s results show a mature market with strong participation. Online casino activity led the way, sports betting delivered solid revenue, and poker maintained its place. Together, those segments pushed Ontario to another notable month in regulated online gambling.
