Big Companies Join the Taskforce

Several large companies joined the group earlier this year. These include Google, Mastercard, TikTok, and Visa. Banks, regulators, tech firms, and police also take part. They will work together to reduce illegal gambling activity in the UK.

The government has set out the taskforce’s main work areas. It will focus on three key goals:

  • blocking payments linked to illegal gambling

  • reducing illegal gambling ads online

  • improving cooperation between enforcement bodies

Each area will be handled by separate teams. They will report back to the main taskforce. Outside experts may also join when needed.

Payments and Online Ads Under Review

Officials are especially concerned about payment systems. They believe illegal operators still use financial routes to process money. The group will look for ways to stop or flag suspicious transactions. Payment providers may face more pressure to improve checks.

Online ads are also a major focus. Illegal gambling sites can still appear through social media, search engines, and video platforms. Technology companies may need stronger monitoring systems. Some firms may also change their internal rules to reduce risk.

The government says all members must actively support the taskforce. This includes attending meetings and helping develop new ideas.

Gambling Commission Keeps Its Role

The taskforce will not replace the Gambling Commission. The regulator will keep its enforcement powers and independence. Instead, the taskforce will support cooperation between groups. It will not run investigations directly.

Officials said its aim is to find solutions to illegal gambling problems. Enforcement decisions will still be handled by regulators. The taskforce will run for 12 months at first. It may be extended later if needed. Members will meet twice a year, with smaller group meetings more often.

New Focus on Illegal Gambling Markets

The Gambling Commission has also opened a new senior role. The job focuses on illegal gambling markets and enforcement strategy. The role includes gathering intelligence and working with operators and tech firms. It may also involve more cross-border investigations.

Some attention has gone to the salary, set at £65,000 a year, along with travel to Birmingham. Some observers question whether this pay matches the job’s scope. Still, the Commission says it is strengthening its fight against illegal gambling.
