Volatility

Volatility is a characteristic of a casino game’s win potential, mostly used in slots.

It explains 2 main things:

  • How often you can expect to win.

  • Whether the wins are usually small or large.

Levels of Volatility

There are three main levels:

  • Low volatility
Wins happen often, but they are usually small. Ideal for players who want longer sessions with less risk.

  • Medium volatility
A balance between win frequency and size. You can get both smaller and bigger wins.

  • High volatility
Wins are less frequent, but they can be large. This level suits players who are chasing big payouts and accept higher risk.

Some providers also use blended levels, like low-medium or medium-high volatility.

Why Volatility Matters

  • Budget management. Volatility helps you plan your bets. With low volatility, you can expect more frequent wins, so your balance lasts longer. With high volatility, you may go many spins without a win — so you need a larger budget to keep playing.

  • Playing strategy. Your goal affects which volatility level fits best. If you enjoy regular small wins, choose low or medium volatility. If you're aiming for big wins or jackpots, go with high volatility.

  • Gameplay experience. Volatility changes how the game feels. Frequent small wins may feel steady but less exciting over time. Big, rare wins can be more thrilling — but they come with longer dry spells.

Notes

  • Volatility can also be shown on a scale from 1 to 10, not just as "low", "medium", or "high".

  • Although volatility is mostly used in slots, it may appear in other casino games too.
