Rising Illegal Gambling Puts Pressure on Czech Budget and Regulators
Illegal online casinos are reaching more Czech players and may drain billions from the state budget. New research shows fast growth, weak filters, and confused users — placing strong pressure on regulators and legal operators.
Billions Slip Away From the State
Economic reviews say the country may lose about 330m CZK in tax revenue each month. That steady drain could reach almost 4bn CZK per year. Officials warn this loss may slow support for sports, culture, and addiction programs.
Analysts also estimate that players may lose about 14.5bn CZK with illegal operators. Much of this money moves out of the national economy and into companies that stay beyond Czech control. It creates a slow pull — one that harms legal casinos while helping offshore groups grow stronger.
Research Shows Many Users Visit Illegal Sites
Surveys show that almost 66 percent of those on the national self-exclusion list still play on illegal websites. Many users say they do not know whether a casino holds a Czech license — a sign of weak awareness and unclear rules.
Experts estimate that around 800,000 people use illegal websites. Nearly half may not know the legal status of the sites they choose. These users enter spaces with no limits, no controls, and no basic safety checks — often without noticing the risk.
A clear gap stands out — the legal market counts 27 licensed casinos, while illegal groups may run more than 1,100 active websites.
Illegal Sites Copy Trusted Local Brands
Industry leaders report a sharp rise in fake websites. Several illegal sites now copy the look of known Czech brands. They use similar colors and layouts to trick new users. These copies then send money to owners outside the country — often without any form of oversight.
Some of these illegal brands reach search volumes near 110,000 searches each month. This strong interest helps them attract new users who believe they are visiting trusted companies. Local operators say dozens of fake versions of their websites have appeared in recent months.
Current Controls Are Not Enough
Regulators try to block illegal websites, yet the gap between legal and illegal options keeps widening. Experts say stronger tech tools are needed to slow the spread. They also call for faster teamwork with banks and payment firms — steps that may block money before it moves offshore. Experts want:
Stronger tech to block illegal websites
Faster links with banks and payment firms
More public awareness of risky online casinos
A Market Near a Key Moment
Czech officials now face a serious moment. The illegal market keeps expanding — and each month brings new losses. Without stronger action, more users may enter risky spaces without knowing the danger. The pressure grows with each season.
