BetFred Leaves Maryland as Other Gaming Operators Arrive
BetFred Sportsbook has announced its withdrawal from Maryland’s sports betting market, ending its partnership with Long Shot’s Off-Track Betting after struggling to gain traction in the state.
On June 20, BetFred Sportsbook announced its decision to exit Maryland's sports wagering market during a meeting with the Maryland State Lottery & Gaming Control Agency. The operator, which had partnered with Long Shot’s Off-Track Betting (OTB) in Frederick, struggled to gain traction in the state.
The company will close both its retail and digital sportsbooks this summer.
The physical betting location will close on June 30.
The digital platform will cease operations in July.
The decision marks an end to BetFred’s brief Maryland venture.
Maryland’s wagering laws allow over 15 “Class B” licenses, enabling sports betting beyond large casinos to include OTBs, bingo halls, and smaller venues. This inclusive framework was designed to support small businesses and minority- or women-owned enterprises.
As BetFred exits, Long Shot’s is planning to form a new partnership for sports betting, though details remain undisclosed. Maryland Lottery & Gaming Director John Martin described the separation as amicable and mutual, noting that such market realignments are common as the industry matures.
Meanwhile, several operators are preparing to enter Maryland’s market:
Bally’s Corporation will launch its Bally Bet digital platform in July.
Veteran’s Service Corporation (VSC) plans to debut Bee-Fee Limited on July 1.
Betr is currently seeking regulatory approval to join the state’s sports betting landscape.
These developments come amid strong growth — Maryland sportsbooks saw a 34.8% handle increase in May 2023 compared to the previous year. With up to 60 online wagering platforms permitted by law, Maryland’s regulatory structure promotes competition, innovation, and accessibility across the gaming sector.
As BetFred departs, Maryland’s evolving market continues to attract new operators, ensuring the state remains a dynamic hub for sports wagering.
