A U.S. federal court has officially deemed Robux a currency in a case on kids’ online casinos

A U.S. federal court has issued a landmark decision, ruling that Robux counts as real money in a case involving underage gambling — a move that puts added pressure on RBLXWild and raises new questions for Roblox.

A federal court on December 10 rejected a motion by Boris Said Jr., owner of the online casino RBLXWild, to dismiss a class-action lawsuit filed by parents whose children gambled on the iGaming site, which accepted deposits in Robux, the in-game currency from Roblox. Said argued that Robux has no inherent value and is not legally considered a currency, claiming his casino did not break the law. The court ruled that Robux carries monetary value and, for the purposes of this case, is equivalent to real money.

Said personally oversaw all operations, and the platform generated up to $99,000 in daily revenue. The case will proceed, and RBLXWild is now classified as an illegal iGaming operator.

In 2024, Sky News exposed the operations of three major online casinos — RBLXWild, Bloxmoon, and BloxFlip — all targeting children and accepting deposits via in-game currency.

Roblox Faces Broader Legal Pressure

Several earlier court filings also note that Roblox itself is under legal pressure. Judge Vince Chhabria previously allowed a separate class-action lawsuit against Roblox Corporation to move forward, stating that the platform may have facilitated underage gambling by enabling third-party sites to accept and exchange Robux for real money while taking a commission on transactions. This broader context strengthens the court’s position that Robux carries real monetary value.

How Third-Party Casinos Operated

Investigations revealed that platforms like RBLXWild, Bloxmoon, and BloxFlip let users link their Roblox accounts and gamble Robux in games such as blackjack and coin flip. Although Robux is marketed as a virtual currency, developers and operators have been able to convert it back into cash through Roblox’s systems, creating a financial incentive and giving the currency legal weight in commercial disputes.

Concerns Over Child Safety

Consumer advocates and parents argue that Roblox failed to adequately protect minors from these gambling mechanisms, even as such sites attracted millions of young users. Media investigations in the U.S. and UK have intensified regulatory scrutiny, raising questions about the responsibility of platforms hosting massive in-game economies.

Potential Industry-Wide Impact

Legal experts say that recognizing Robux as a currency could have far-reaching consequences. The ruling may influence how virtual currencies are regulated in cases involving gambling, child safety, and digital marketplaces, while potentially opening the door to further litigation against Roblox and associated operators.
