Hold and Win
Hold and Win is a slot bonus feature that locks special symbols — usually coins or multipliers — onto the reels and awards a set number of respins. Each time a new qualifying symbol lands, the respin counter resets. The round ends when the counter runs out or the reels are full. Also known as Hold and Spin or Lock-and-Spin.
How Hold and Win Works
When a triggering symbol lands during the base game or bonus round, it locks in place, and the respin counter resets to three. Every new symbol that lands also locks, and the counter resets to three again. Symbols already locked stay in position for the rest of the round. The feature ends when the counter reaches zero — no new symbols landed — or when every reel position is filled. Your payout is calculated from all locked symbols at the end.
Hold and Win vs. Free Spins
Hold and Win | Free Spins | |
|---|---|---|
Trigger | Special symbol (coin, orb, chest) | Scatter symbol |
Mechanic | Symbols lock in place + respins | Fixed number of spins |
Counter reset | Yes — resets to 3 on each new symbol | No |
Goal | Fill the grid, collect symbol values | Accumulate wins across set spins |
The key difference: in free spins the number of rounds is fixed from the start. In Hold and Win, the round can extend indefinitely as long as new symbols keep landing.
