Most often, it is asked by players in order to understand whether they are violating any laws, rules, or other foundations by playing a particular game. In this article, we will break down the concept of gambling and understand why it is so important to know it.

The Core Definition of Gambling

Gambling can be defined in different ways, but averaging all existing definitions, such games contain four important components: risk, value, chance, and reward. That is, it is a game in which the player risks something of value for the possibility of receiving some kind of reward.

What Is Not Considered Gambling?

Everything depends on how the interpretation of these four components is understood. For example, in some legal interpretations, the concept of “reward” can be distorted – and if it is non-material, then the game is not considered gambling. In other interpretations, the concept of “value” can vary – in one case it is something that can be bought for money, and in others it may be considered something intangible – for example, time. In short, in each territory and jurisdiction, the concept can be individual. But most importantly – in most cases, the determining factor is the absence of the element of chance in the game. If the result depends on specific factors – the process will not be considered gambling.

But based on practice, usually the following are not considered gambling:

  1. Any competition
Yes, a player may pay an entry fee and thereby risk their money. There may also be a reward at stake. But if the outcome of the game depends on skill rather than chance – this is not gambling. Clear examples: chess, quizzes, and even cybersport.

  2. Prize draws
Here, most often, there is a reward based on a random combination of circumstances – but if the person does not risk any value, then it is not considered gambling.

  3. Investment operations
Here there is risk of losing value, potential reward, and even some element of chance – but behind this lie detailed analysis, forecasting, and clear material calculation.

Why is it so important for everyone to define what is considered gambling?

The biggest risk and danger of gambling is that some players cannot control their desire to play and their self-control during the game. This can result in addiction, loss of money, and the development of gambling dependence.

It is precisely this factor that contributes to the global effort to regulate and legalize gambling. Legal gambling means that players are provided with the safest possible conditions. Their gaming process is monitored by the casino, the player can use responsible gambling tools, and in case of problems, there is always someone to turn to for help.

What Is Considered Illegal Gambling?

Illegality can be understood as disregard for any rules and laws. This type of activity definitely includes underground gambling. A clear example – unregistered offline casinos, venues with card games, and others. Or, for example, online casino sites that are not registered in any country and have no license – these can also be considered completely illegal.

Another important criterion of legality for any game is its permission and admissibility for the player within the rules and laws of their jurisdiction. That is, what is legal for players in one territory may be illegal for players in another.

Thus, if, for example, a casino is not registered anywhere and does not comply with any laws or rules – it can be considered illegal. And if it only fails to comply with the laws of the player’s jurisdiction – then it is illegal in that particular case.

Are there any gambling activities that are 100% legal in every country?

Unfortunately, there are no gambling activities that are always considered legal and permitted regardless of the country. This is due to:

  • different legislation
Each country has its own laws and regulatory authorities for gambling organizations

  • religious context
In some religions, such as Islam, gambling is strictly prohibited. In Buddhism, for example, there is no strict position, but gambling is condemned as a clear form of greed. In Judaism and Christianity, temptation by money and excess are also condemned. For example, in the Bible there is a proverb: “The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.”  Which condemns those who rely on chance – but still does not impose a strict ban.

Conclusion

We have defined that gambling refers to games in which a player risks something of value in order to receive a random reward. We also understood that defining whether a game is gambling is important primarily for the player’s safety.
In order to understand:

  • whether there is a risk of violating any law

  • whether there is a risk of violating cultural or religious norms

  • whether there is a risk to mental health

Even if the player understands that the game is considered gambling but is aware of all their risks and complies with the law – they can play and enjoy it. The main thing is to choose reliable gambling sites that also follow all necessary rules and laws.
