Treasures of Kilauea slot machine is one of the few modern slots that is wildly popular among players, and it deserves this popularity. Despite its classic structure, which is a 5-reel, 3-row grid game with fixed paylines, which is slightly less common among top games than the cluster system, the slot is packed with features, has a generous maximum win, and can keep you hooked on the game. All the mechanics are well-designed, not only visually but also technically. And although the game was released back in 2023, it feels and plays as if it were released yesterday.

Symbols

Since the game has a unique field that is divided into two parts — top to bottom and right to left — the paylines are slightly different here (there are as many as 40 of them here): 

Features are the heart of this slot. They complement and sometimes even trigger one another. When it comes to the art of game design, this slot is a prime example. 

Lava Spin — every 10 spins, Lava Spin activates: Volcano symbols leave lava frames that turn into Wilds on the next spin, with additional Wilds randomly awarded. This feature is actually the main source of winnings. Usually, this source is Free Spins, but this rule, like many others, does not apply to this slot. Here, the player clearly knows the timing. But if you immediately thought that you could play at a bet of, say, $2, and then, knowing when the Wilds will appear, decide to change the bet to $5 or more, the game will not allow it. So don't even try.

Eruption Spin — every 5 Lava Spins, Eruption Spin erupts. Lava frames turn symbols Wild, and reels 1-5 get Wilds with x2 multipliers. 

Wild Symbols — standard Wilds substitute for all except Idol and Volcano symbols. x2 Wilds double wins on substitution, and they appear more frequently during Lava/Eruption spins. I thought that at least the micro jackpot would be pretty easy to win, but in reality, it's totally a matter of luck. By the way, I managed to win the micro jackpot.

Also, note that the features here are not just floating around, and you have to sit and think about when they will work. At the top left, you see a stone icon of a sharp-toothed frog with the number 10 — this is a clear indicator of when the feature will be active. On the right, you can see the same stone icon, but with the face of a volcano, which you can also see in the background. The number 5 is an indicator of when the feature will be activated. On the left statue, the numbers disappear with each spin, and on the right, every 10 spins. Therefore, everything is as clear as possible here.

The chances of winning here are really quite high, which is why the slot has remained at the top since its release.

Basic algorithm: place your bet (I recommend between 2 and 5, I played at 5) and just spin the slot. You cannot influence how it works, and just because you know when the feature will appear does not mean you can control it. 

The main tip, or rather a warning: under no circumstances should you change your bet when you see that there are only a few spins left before the Wilds appear. You will simply break the streak, and the game will even warn you about this by displaying the following screen: 

I'll start with the visuals, because they are simply fabulous here. The slot looks fresh, and it's clear that the artists were given free rein during development. Everything is beautifully animated and accompanied by high-quality sound. What's more, when you're on the verge of hitting a bonus round or jackpot, the camera zooms in closer to where the symbol might land. This is the highest level of immersion. 

When I saw this, I even thought for a second that something had happened to the game, because this technique is used very rarely. And when you do manage to hit the jackpot, the camera moves away from the field, turns left, and literally rushes through the jungle to the jackpot circle. In short, for the visuals, camera work, and player engagement alone, the game deserves 200 out of 100 possible points.

I tested the game twice, so you will see screenshots from two different sessions below. But the essence is the same: rewards fall often, often large wins of around $60 on a $5 bet per spin. But of course, empty spins make up 60% of the game. That's the standard. The game is generous with Wilds, less generous with bonus rounds (in two sessions, which is more than 200 spins, I still couldn't get it), and even less generous with jackpots (I still managed to get it). In one session, I ended up with a negative balance, but not significantly, within the norm. On the other hand, I increased my balance. Therefore, I think this is a great opportunity to try the slot. I definitely recommend it.
